Ecosmart Destratifier - It Doesn’t Cost the Earth
With issues such as air quality and energy efficiency becoming increasingly more important, delivering a ventilation system which creates a fresh, healthy and comfortable environment is paramount, as well as providing an optimum energy saving ventilation solution. Deva Designs, the leading UK producer of design led gift wrap, gift bags, gift boxes and accessories, had used a warm air system in their warehouse area for a number of years but had never been entirely satisfied with the system performance and economy. Temperatures on the mezzanine floor, used by the design team were always too high and made working conditions uncomfortable. Operatives on the shop floor had to wear additional clothes to keep warm. Connaught Gasforce Ltd, a national maintenance and installation company was asked to improve working conditions and deliver a solution that was more energy efficient. Robert McNamara, Connaught Gasforce's Sales Director commented, "Connaught Gasforce's mission is to supply and install cost effective heating, ventilation and catering equipment solutions. We have trained all our sales people to look at the life time cost, advising our customers on latest energy saving products, Carbon Trust and tax benefits. We can then maintain this equipment over its lifespan to insure it stays efficient and legal compliance is met." Nuaire was first approached by Connaught Gasforce to use their experience in providing energy saving ventilation solutions. The company leads the industry in developing best practice and helping clients reduce their energy demands and carbon emissions. Although other solutions were considered Nuaire’s Ecosmart Destratifier was the only system to meet the specific requirements of the project: no disruption to working procedures, equalisation of temperatures on the shop floor and mezzanine "without creating draughts" as well as the very best energy saving solution available. As a result four Ecosmart Destratifiers were easily and inexpensively installed at a height of 2.4 metres along the rear of the building without the need for costly and obtrusive ductwork. The low level installation meant that installation was quick with minimal health and safety issues involved. Ecosmart Destratifier uses the total heat available, however generated and redistributes it counteracting the natural tendency of hot air to rise to the underside of a roof. Without Ecosmart Destratifier in place, the roof fabric temperature had been 26°C and the floor level 14°C. Within a very short period the air and fabric temperature at high level was 20°C and low level air temperature 19°C. Ecosmart Destratifier is the most energy efficient destratification product available, delivering destratification to within 1°C and up to a 20% saving in fabric related heat loss. Energy usage is minimised by the redistribution of high level warm air which in addition reduces energy costs. As a result of the installation of Ecosmart Destratifier one of the original heaters could be removed, whilst maintaining comfortable even temperatures throughout. Deva Designs were able to demonstrate that the installation of the Ecosmart Destratifiers would give considerable fuel input savings and as a result received an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust to carry out the project. In fact, figures calculated post installation revealed a fabric related heat loss saving of 23%.
The Pearl of the Middle East
Nuaire recently secured an order for nearly £1/4 million to provide ventilation equipment for the largest real estate project in Qatar, known as the Pearl Qatar. The Pearl Qatar is a multi billion pound man-made island covering 985 acres of reclaimed land offshore the Arabian Peninsula state of Qatar. It is Qatar's first international real estate venture, comprising beachfront villas, elegant town homes, luxury apartments, exclusive penthouses, 5 star hotels, marinas, schools as well as upscale retail and restaurant offerings. Nuaire will be supplying ventilation equipment for the 10 distinct, themed districts which are to be developed over five years in a four phase mixed-use development. Although the original specification from the main consultant was American in design, Nuaire was able to demonstrate that the quality and performance of their products more than matched the original specification. This was possible due to the Nuaire's investment in its own AMCA approved test laboratory as well as their product range of axial fans which are certified to the new EN high-temperature standard. The order was placed through Qatar International Trading, Nuaire's main agent in Qatar. QIT's client orientated approach and technical expertise is well known throughout the country. The company ensures that the superior level of service which is essential on a project of this size is maintained. Work is scheduled to start in Sept 2007 and the first residents will move in by December 2007. By 2009 there will be a residential population of about 40,000 people along with guests at the three 5 star hotels and other tourists and visitors.
Nuaire Wins Pioneering Low Carbon Homes Project
An iconic residential site in Milton Keynes has recently been opened on a 3 hectare site in Oxley Wood addressing the need for sustainable and affordable homes for the future. The development of 145 environmentally friendly homes will provide a mixture of affordable housing and larger private dwellings, all of which are constructed from sustainable materials and feature Nuaire's unique EcoHat energy saving system. The project, which teams Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK's largest developers with Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners (formerly Richard Rogers Partnership) one of the worlds leading architect firms and designers of the Millennium Dome, is one of 6 winning partnerships of the 2005 competition to build high quality homes at a construction cost of £60,000. The prime focus of the competition by the English Partnership and the then titled ODPM was to encourage architects and housebuilders to work closely together to create innovative and imaginative housing for the 21st century. All of the homes on site have been designed to meet the Government's sustainability targets, using high levels of insulation and controlled ventilation in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. When compared to other new developments, the site at Oxley Wood will have up to 50% less carbon emissions per property. Nuaire were first approached to get involved in the project by Rybka the mechanical consultants appointed for the project in December 2005 to provide the ventilation for the site. Working closely with the architects and the consultants to develop a bespoke system to maximise energy and construction efficiencies, Nuaire were given the brief of making the EcoHat system a credible energy contributor to the houses. The EcoHat is a new generation of ventilation systems, based on the award winning Sunwarm range of products. By positioning the EcoHat on the roof, the air handling unit inside the base unit diffuses fresh filtered air into the building and reuses otherwise lost hot air to pre-heat the incoming air. Complemented by solar energy the system optimises energy consumption and provides solar preheated air and central extract and can be upgraded to provide passive solar hot water. As the whole site has adopted an MMC approach with off- site construction, pre-fabricating timber frames for walls, ceilings and floors in controlled environments, Nuaire adopted the principle for the EcoHat base units. The systems are pre-assembled at Nuaire's manufacturing plant in South Wales before being despatched to site. Not only does this allow for quicker installations but the systems can also be rotated for best orientation. The development's cutting edge design is reinforced by the futuristic EcoHat, which sits atop each property. The system plays a pivotal role in each property achieving the maximum National Home Energy Rating. Alan Wright, Group Managing Director for Nuaire said, "The increased complexity of achieving sustainable homes while enabling cost effective, modern methods of construction was a challenge. However Nuaire’s commitment to applying advanced technology and deliver ventilation solutions which meet customers needs is a key strength of our Company and we were delighted to collaborate with The Roger’s Partnership and Taylor Wimpey in developing Ecohat; a new concept in building services."
Nuaire Adopts a Green Dragon
Nuaire has been awarded Level 3 of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard for its commitment to improving the impact of its activities on the environment through defined environmental objectives and targets. The Green Dragon Award, which is an internationally recognised standard, has been developed by ARENA Network and Groundwork Wales with support from the Welsh Assembly Government, Environment Agency Wales, Welsh Local Authorities and the European Regional Development Fund. The Standard which is a stepped approach to environmental management, offers a relevant strategy to the specific needs of any company. Reducing the environmental impact of its business is a high priority for Nuaire and is evident through product development and continuous improvement programmes include the specific environmental objectives of reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions and promoting the use of renewable technologies. Some of the measures implemented by Nuaire include maximizing efficient use of natural resources by completing a carbon trust audit, raising the environmental awareness of all employees through regular updates and training and monitoring electricity, gas and water use.
